Smile Train
The Smile Train is a charity that I like. Their mission is giving children all over the world cleft pallet surgeries. They recently got some great exposure when a short documentary, about a girl who had a surgery in one of their hospitals, won an oscar. Here's the trailer:
ADRA does good work too, and Kevin enjoys Kiva.org, what is your favorite charity?

Universal cell phone chargers
File this under dull but somewhat interesting. Someday in the future cell phone companies might agree to use one universal charger that will work for all your mobile devices. A story from embedded.com guesses around 2012 or so. Not surprisingly Verizon is not on the list of people who have signed up to play along.

The downward spiral of LA radio
I was thoroughly bummed when Indie 103 went internet only in January. (Replaced on the air by Spanish language)
And now KLSX 97.1 fm talk is going pop top 40.
What's next? KFI goes Spanish language? Actually that would kind of great considering the irony involved.
LA radio is incredibly lame. I'm thankful for the 10 miles of my drive that are still within range of the San Diego stations -- that remain, for the time, quite good.
On the internet radio front: LaunchCast on Yahoo music dropped the 'my station' and commercial free options when CBS radio took it over.

Webcams
I am happy with the webcams that I purchased last week! I sent my sister a camera and purchased myself one too. They seem to work very well. The audio and lowish light performance are both impressive. And talking with the nephews is great. Andrew wanted to hand me a book today... He didn't seem all that bummed out when passing it through the screen didn't work.

Adventures with butter
Tonight I discovered that butter becomes delicious when it is browned! I already knew this I suppose, but I had never tried it at home. I was attempting to recreate the Spaghetti Factory "Myztihra Cheese" spaghetti dish. I would call the attempt a success. The powdery grated myzithra that I was able to find at Ralphs wasn't quite as potent as the shredded variety that they use at the Spaghetti Factory. Also, I found this interesting quote.
and well - it's on the internet so it must be true. Another hot tip is that Trader Joe's reportedly carries the real deal cheese so I will have to look for it there. Also I think I need more practice, or need to filter the butter after browning.
Now, on to lessons learned. Today we learned that oil can get much hotter than water on the stove top. This was demonstrated by "an experiment" that I ran were the goal was supposed to be tasting the browned butter, but the result was leaving a mark on my tongue instead of flavor! I dipped a fork into the butter and then blew what I considered to be an appropriate amount to cool the fork before tasting the butter. This resulted in a sizzling sound. Luckily I didn't fully commit to the tasting otherwise my mouth actually might be sore instead of just lightly branded. It doesn't hurt - lesson learned the easy way as far as I am concerned!

smart blocks
Jason IM'd this to me this morning. Very cool technology demonstration. I like that the words spell check themselves! However I'm not sure at what age these become appropriate. What I'm getting at is when is it healthy to introduce a level abstraction? Is it healthy to warp a developing mind's perception of reality? Perhaps I'm over thinking things. (embedded video)

Links
Things that entertained me recently!
Ice cream flavor puns for W's legacy
A pet spider in flash, feed him with the space bar!
www.fmylife.com is a collection of one line rants mostly about things going wrong for people doing things that they probably shouldn't have been doing anyway *clicks you deserved that*
Reads a little bit like post secret with out all the art and drama.
A dog in an airplane. Dogs are great.
Robot chicken link: Pedants beware - it's the law!

Winter in socal
Winter in socal is not cold. And Loma Linda really shines after a little rain makes the hills hint that they can be something more beautiful than a dusty, smog obscured, place for tumble weeds to grow.
Panorama fun starring Kevin!

Hello.

IS ON THE AIR!
I am using a 'real' blog now since everyone who's anyone was following my twitter feed with RSS. 140 characters just isn't quite enough space to thoroughly entertain the masses. I think this blog will be links and pictures that I thought were cool, but not quite cool enough to bog down your inbox with.
Also I ordered a webcam today. (Yes, I started a blog and got a webcam on the same day - hello 2005)
